Established in 2016, SOPHIA by Shirley is a Malaysian business focusing on creating ‘one of a kind’ handmade bags using vintage Japanese handwoven kimono and obi silk. Because each of this fabric is unique, every SOPHIA piece holds its unique story. A piece that starts conversation, a gift, a statement, an indulgence, an art. The story is infinite.
SOPHIA plays with a few key motifs such as cranes, phoenixes, peonies and cherry blossoms on many of its pieces. Each of these has symbolic meanings which are explained in a note inserted inside an envelope. The motifs, color and texture of fabrics are purposely chosen to create each bag. The highlight of many of SOPHIA’s creations lies on the handle. Special attention is given to the material used such a exquisite Burmese jade and crystal beads, Malaysian premium wood, Cengal and Merbau, which are renown for its exceptional durability. Trinkets and charms curated in-house are often used as well to add playfulness and final touches to the piece.
SOPHIA has come a long way. The business humbly started with little purses, pouches and simple evening clutches. Simple they might be, they caught the attention of many who appreciate and support local craftsmanship. In recent years, customized orders have grown significantly to cater to individual needs, lifestyle and taste. With this demand, the selection and offering of products have also increased as a result.
Being featured in The Edge, The Star and The Sun, this brand has made its name locally and internationally, creating collaborations with luxury hotels such as Ritz Carlton Kuala Lumpur, Four Seasons Langkawi and Cameron Highland Resorts, and onboard the Eastern and Oriental Express train.
